Fans of the acclaimed independent film “Dear White People” now have reason to celebrate: Netflix just ordered a series based on the movie.
Netflix announced the series order yesterday (May 5), saying in astatement that it will enter production later this year before hitting screens in 2017. Justin Simien, who directed the original 2014 film, will write the series’ ten half-hour episodes and direct the first one. The series, like the film, will depict students of color navigating life a predominantly White univeristy.
“During the film’s release, I had the pleasure to speak with hundreds of students and faculty across a variety of college campuses dealing with these very issues in real time,” Simien said in Netflix’sannouncement. “I’m so grateful to have this platform—not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views.”
