A 71-year-old New Jersey man from MahWah was arrested twice in one day on charges of driving while intoxicated.
Richard Haskell was first arrested Saturday around 7:40 am when police in Ramsey found him sleeping in his parked car near Suraci pond. Police were responding to a call of an “unresponsive man in a vehicle”. Upon arrival, police found Haskell asleep in his car with a bottle of alcohol between his legs. He was given a field sobriety test and failed. His blood alcohol level was allegedly .21 – nearly three times the legal limit, according to the police report. Haskell was later released from police custody to an unnamed adult.
Several hours later Haskell drove himself back to police headquarters in a different vehicle asking when he could get his car back, according to the report.
Officers smelled alcohol again and performed a second sobriety test and determined Haskell’s blood-alcohol level was .14 percent – still over the legal limit to drive a car, the report said.
Haskell was then charged with his second DWI for the day and given a date to appear in Ramsey Municipal Court, according to the report.
No attorney information is available. A phone message left for Haskell wasn’t immediately returned Wednesday.
