Violent arrest leads to questions, investigation

BIG SPRING, TX – Big Spring Police have opened an internal investigation into an arrest made over the weekend.

According to a BSPD Narrative Report, an officer was patrolling the 100 block of West 11th Street when he saw a woman he recognized as Crystal Mesler walking westbound.

The narrative report states that the officer knew Mesler had pending charges and asked dispatch to run a wanted check. He was then informed that she was wanted for Possession of Marijuana.

The officer then made contact with Mesler in a nearby parking lot where police say she resisted arrest. Witnesses however, said the officer brutalized Mesler.

According to witness Marcos Chavera, the officer “told her to put her stuff on the hood, she took a step back and said, ‘no.’ Right when she did that, he just grabbed her and pretty much took her to the ground. He started trying to handcuff her, she was on the phone the whole time. After he did cuff her, he called for back up already.”

The investigation was launched after Chavera posted the arrest video to social media. The video shows the officer knocking Mesler to the ground and pushing the woman’s face into the gravel. It also shows  the officer attempting to get the woman to stand up before eventually dragging her to a patrol car. The officer eventually dragged the handcuffed woman—by the handcuff chain—through gravel and dirt to put her in the cruiser.

While being dragged, witnesses heard Mesler screaming “I’m pregnant, you’re hurting my arms, you broke my wrist”. The officer never called for an ambulance.

An internal investigation at the department is pending, and no further information has been released.
