GULFPORT, MS – A Mississippi Gulf Coast man who rammed into multiple vehicles because he thought zombies were chasing him has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
A circuit court judge this week sentenced 32-year-old Shaun Michael Stroud of Kiln, for an incident in April when he stole a tractor and smashed into several vehicles at a Gulfport Walmart parking lot, and then headed for a Nissan dealership.
Stroud pleaded guilty last week to aggravated assault, grand larceny and malicious mischief.
Gulfport police arrested Stroud on April 8 after he stole the front-end loader from a recycling center. He then drove to a Walmart and smashed into at least four cars, including two with people inside. He also hit two 53-foot utility trailers, then drove it into the Walmart lawn and garden center gate, police said. Stroud’s wild ride ended after he hit a palm tree and got a flat tire.
Stroud told police he thought the world was ending, but Harrison County District Attorney Joel Smith says Stroud was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Besides prison, Stroud must pay $41,000 in restitution and spend five years on post-release supervision.
