Law enforcement officials have confirmed to ABC News that disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein has been found dead of an apparent suicide in his Manhattan jail cell. Epstein, 66, was transported from the Metropolitan Correctional center to the New York Downtown Hospital in cardiac arrest, and later pronounced dead.
According to prison officials, he hanged himself. Epstein had been under suicide watch since July 23, when he had been found unresponsive and with neck wounds in his jail cell.
Epstein was arrested on July 6 for sexually trafficking and abusing minor girls, some as young as 14, in multiple states.
His crimes were brought back into the public eye after renewed scrutiny regarding a ‘sweetheart’ plea deal he reached with the U.S. attorneys office in Miami in 2007, under Alex Acosta. A non-prosecution agreement allowed Epstein to avoid federal charges for sexually abusing minors. He ultimately served 13 months of an 18 month sentence in a Florida county jail.
