Looking At The Language Of Rape Culture

I really trip off how rape is talked about in Rape Culture.
These few words I’m typing up here are speaking the broader culture in a cisnormative gender binary.

The choices of which words are used build a linguistic foundation to build a house of rape upon.

One thing I’ve noticed going from my childhood to my late 30’s is that the term “victim” is relatively new when it comes to being used regularly and that’s only in certain leftist circles where we’re authentically against rape culture full stop.

Outside of that, I hear the more technocratic crowd say “accuser”.
These tend to be the people that claim to “believe women” and then sit back and smile while the “accusation” runs through a system set up by men, staffed by men, supervised and managed by men.  rape-culture

…like okay or whatever.

Clearly the more belligerently in favor of rape culture are going to say “so called victim” and other forms of preemptively declaring the man innocent.  And with the internet, they’ll find a picture of her wearing clothes and based on the woman wearing clothes, they can just tell she’s a “slut”.

But then, here’s the flip.

How they talk about the attackers… or technocratically speaking “the accused.

One thing I notice when the rapist is in the mid 20’s or younger, the language of rape culture suggests we use the word “RUIN”.  I know colloquialism exists and yet I still like to look these words up and see the definition of what these people are saying.

noun: ruin
  1. the physical destruction or disintegration of something or the state of disintegrating or being destroyed.
“a large white house falling into gentle ruin
    • the remains of a building, typically an old one, that has suffered much damage or disintegration.
      plural noun: ruins
      the ruins of the castle”
    • the disastrous disintegration of someone’s life.
“the ruin and heartbreak wrought by alcohol, divorce, and violence”
    • the cause of the disintegration of a person’s life or loss of their assets.
“they don’t know how to say no, and that’s been their ruin”
    • the complete loss of one’s money and other assets.
“the financial cost could mean ruin”
verb: ruin; 3rd person present: ruins; past tense: ruined; past participle: ruined; gerund or present participle: ruining
  1. 1.
reduce (a building or place) to a state of decay, collapse, or disintegration.
“the castle was ruined when dynamite was used to demolish one of the corner towers”
    well maintained
    • cause great and usually irreparable damage or harm to; have a disastrous effect on.
“a noisy freeway has ruined village life”
  2. 2.
fall headlong or with a crash.
“carriages go ruining over the brink from time to time”

“””the disastrous disintegration of someone’s life.”””

Is this what’s actually happening to rapists?
Upon accusation by the victim and/or following accusation is this what really goes down.
A “disastrous disintegration”?

I’m just not buying it.

But was we know in our echo chambers, rape culture is about letting the rapist move along without inconveniencing them.  Even though, it’s defined, and the MEN in charge of everything have deemed it illegal, they still kinda wanna just do it…. ya know tradition and all that, love.

I also notice that when the rapist is an adult going about the trajectory of their life, the term that’s used to make a victim out of the attacker is “DESTROY”.

Hold up… Let’s look that word up.

verb: destroy; 3rd person present: destroys; past tense: destroyed; past participle: destroyed; gerund or present participle: destroying
  1. .
“the room had been destroyed by fire”
    • ruin (someone) emotionally or spiritually.
“he has been determined to destroy her”
    • defeat (someone) utterly.
“the Tigers destroyed the Padres in five games”
    • kill (a sick, savage, or unwanted animal) by humane means.
“their terrier was destroyed after the attack”

“””put an end to the existence of (something) by damaging or attacking it”””

Hold up!

Is that what victims and society are doing to “established” grown men when they simply state what that man did?

Is that really going on out there? Are men having “end” put to their “existence” by being “damaged” or “attacked”?

Bill Clinton got to stay with his wife for appearances and went on to be el presidente for 8 years and has his name in global history for his “accomplishments”.

Doesn’t seem very “destroyed” to me.

While his victim, Juanita Broderick can be heard on a podcast…
…a podcast

And now it seems to be the direction things are going for Joe Biden.

If they can pull off the electoral college in November this year, he’ll be right up there Billy Clint and the rest of those rapists of whom we’ve heard from their victims and from those of whom we haven’t.

I’d bet my overtime check, there’s far more of whom we haven’t heard from because the practice of rape culture put them in their place while the language of rape culture propagandizes the populace to help keep them there.
