During a racist tirade caught on video, Joseph Fucheck, 58 waved a pistol around while yelling at a Black homeowner in North Miami-Dade. “Damn right, I carry a gun because I’m a 35-year former Navy SEAL!” he yelled. “Go look at my Purple Heart!”
Detectives found that supposed Purple Heart when they raided Fucheck’s Miami apartment, along with Navy certificates, dress uniforms and even portrait photos of Fucheck decked out like an admiral in front of an American flag.
The catch? None of it was real.
The Navy SEAL Museum, which maintains a record of every person who has become a SEAL, told the Miami Herald on Monday that Joseph Fucheck is not in their system.
Additionally, Fucheck’s daughter, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed to the newspaper that her father never served in the military and has been pretending to be a Navy SEAL for years.
According to an arrest affidavit seen by the Herald, Fucheck was dropping off flyers in mailboxes in a North Miami-Dade neighborhood on June 14, when he got into a confrontation with Dwayne Wynn.
Wynn and his neighbor were talking outside the neighbor’s house June 14 in Miami’s Little River neighborhood when he saw Fucheck drive up in a red Jeep Cherokee and park at his own home. Fucheck then placed a card in Wynn’s mailbox. After Fucheck drove away, Wynn walked to his mailbox to examine the 3×5 card printed with Fucheck’s name and the phrases, “We Buy Houses … CASH!” and “We Buy Houses … FAST!”
Wynn walked back across the street to resume his conversation with his friend.
“When he heard a car approaching, Mr. Wynn looked up and saw Fucheck’s Jeep coming down the street towards him,” the news release said. “Fucheck allegedly parked the car between Mr. Wynn and his home, jumped out of his vehicle, and began a profanity-laced rant, stating, ‘That’s not your property mother(expletive)! I saw you! I was down the street watching you!
“‘I saw you take that out of there. You’re just a mother(expletive) nosey neighbor! Give me my card, that’s my property!‘”
Fucheck then allegedly lunged at Wynn twice before pulling out a gun.
“Mother(expletive), you’re going to give me that mother(expletive) card. That’s my property!” Fucheck continued.
“Damn right, I carry a gun because I’m a 35-year former Navy SEAL!” he yelled at one point, according to the Herald. “Go look at my Purple Heart!” He also claimed to be the former head of the SWAT team in Hillsborough County, yet another claim that also turned out to be false.
In the video, Fucheck tells Wynn to look at the Purple Heart on his license plate and to “run (his) tag” to see who he is. Wynn assures him that he and witnesses have the tag number. Police noted that Fucheck broke a state law by having a license plate designated for Purple Heart recipients. In order to get that license plate, one has to submit military paperwork to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
As Fucheck climbed back in his Jeep, he continued to hurl expletives and insults at Wynn, including the N-word.
“No wonder why you have people like you getting shot, ‘cause you act stupid,” Fucheck shouts.
“Oh, that’s why we get shot?” Wynn responds. “So now it’s racial, too?”
Fucheck shouts the N-word as he drives off.
Fucheck remains jailed on a charge of aggravated assault with prejudice. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
