Why Do These Lawyers Want The Word Victim Excluded From The Ahmaud Arbery Case?

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The father and son charged in the deadly shooting of Ahmaud Arbery are asking that he not be called a victim.

Gregory and Travis McMichael are accused of murdering Arbery in February.

Lawyers for the McMichaels filed motions in late December.

One motion requested that Arbery not be called a victim in the trial, arguing it would be prejudicial.

Another motion asks the court to limit which photos of Arbery are shown.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to Arbery’s murder outside Brunswick and are being held without bond.

They claim they thought he was a burglar, while his family says he was just jogging,

Also charged in the case is William “Roddie” Bryan Jr., who recorded the shooting on video, although prosecutors say he played a larger role.

The Feb. 23 slaying fueled anger among protesters across the country who were demonstrating against the deaths of several Black people at the hands of police. Gregory McMichael is a former law enforcement officer, and the case wasn’t prosecuted until weeks later after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation got involved.

Arbery has family ties to the CSRA and is buried outside Waynesboro.
