Are We Surprised That Charlamagne Is A Rapist?

So we’ll have to dig into this.
Of course I, William got the news nice and late so had to completely rework show prep and then prep the new show prep.

How will we cover this.
We mention and riff on rape culture fairly often for nearly 700 episodes.
So with this, I think we should cover how it’s being covered.

That’s the deal.

Of course, the short version will be free and then the episode will continue behind the paywall.

COLUMBUS, Ohio–Bernie Sanders’ supporters inside and outside Ohio have been working to draft Democratic ex-lawmaker Nina Turner to run for governor, according to a leader of the effort.

The effort, called “Turn Ohio Around,” is being run by leaders of Sanders’ presidential campaign in Ohio, as well as former members of Sanders’ national digital team, according to Jason Edwards, who led Sanders’ Ohio delegation to this year’s Democratic National Convention.

Turner, a 49-year-old former Democratic state senator from Cleveland, was one of the most prominent supporters of Sanders’ presidential campaign earlier this year.

Edwards said activists have talked with Turner about a potential run. “She’s very excited and flattered to see what we’re going to come up with,” he said.

Turner didn’t return a phone call Saturday seeking comment.

The next step, Edwards said, is to launch a website and start raising money for a potential gubernatorial campaign.

Asked why they’re pushing Turner to run for governor, Edwards said, “We feel like Nina has the best chance to contrast the Republican message here in Ohio.”

Edwards continued: “Personally, I feel like Nina could be the next Barack Obama. Barack Obama invigorated a bunch of people to get involved in politics. We feel like Nina could do that as well.”

However, Turner wouldn’t be Sanders’ supporters only pick for governor. Edwards said if Democratic Ohio Supreme Court Justice Bill O’Neill decides to run, Turn Ohio Around would also back him, even if Turner also enters the race.

It’ll take more than a slur in the snow to stop a museum in Idaho from its mission.

Someone wrote the N-word in the snow on top of a storage unit at the Idaho Black History Museum.

Phillip Thompson, the museum’s board president and executive director, said he saw it Wednesday morning.

“I saw it, and I almost chuckled but I was also shocked,” Thompson told KBOI. “What they did was pointless (given how cold it is).”

Thompson’s not making a police report, reasoning the cops wouldn’t be able to do anything about it and “they have much more important things to do.”

Also, this isn’t the first time the facility’s been hit by hate.

In 2002, vandals drew a swastika on the building’s doors.

A giant heart

But, whenever ugliness rears its head, the goodness comes to counter it.

One museum supporter, repulsed by the slur, left a message of her own in the snow.

By dragging her shoes along the ground, Kirsten Furlong drew a giant heart in the museum’s front yard.

“The hate just spreads. That’s why we have to stop it and take action,” she said. “There’s a lot more people who don’t agree with that message, so those people have to act.”

Thompson said the fact people continue to leave racial slurs proves the museum’s stated mission – to build bridges between cultures – is still valid.

“People want to (act) like this doesn’t exist or act in such a way that we’re past this,” he said. “And, we’re not.”

Colombia: brutal rape and death of girl shocks country marred by crime

Bogotá erupts in protests after it emerged suspect in killing of seven-year-old from a poor district is from a wealthy family

People participate in a farewell ceremony on Wednesday for Yuliana Andrea Samboní.
Even in a country often numbed by outbreaks of violence and heinous crime, the brutal death of a seven-year-old indigenous girl has horrified Colombia.

Yuliana Andrea Samboní was playing with a cousin outside her family’s breeze-block home on the morning of 4 December in a poor neighbourhood of Bogotá when a man in a grey SUV snatched her from the street and sped away. Her body was found 10 hours later, raped, tortured and strangled, in the machine room of a hot tub at a nearby luxury penthouse.

The crime prompted outrage and street protests against a killing that has highlighted deep class divides.

The suspect, Rafael Uribe Noguera, is from a wealthy family of lawyers and architects and attended one of Bogotá’s most exclusive schools. Yuliana and her family moved to the city four years ago from southern Cauca province, which is rife with violence linked to Colombia’s ongoing civil conflict. Her father worked in construction and her mother was five months pregnant with her third child.

An Arkansas chaplain assaulted female inmates on a weekly basis during private ‘prayer sessions’—and one victim claims other prison officials helped him get away with it.

Kate Briquelet

12.02.16 12:03 AM ET

He promised spiritual counseling and a shot at parole. But for years, Kenneth Dewitt, the aging chaplain at an Arkansas lockup, called female prisoners to his office for “special training” and raped them instead.

Dewitt was sentenced to five years for assaulting three women at the McPherson Unit in Newport from 2013 to 2014. He originally faced 50 counts of sexual assault, each carrying 10 years behind bars, but took a plea deal this summer.

Now the crooked clergyman is named in a lawsuit from one of his victims, Leticia Villarreal, a single mother from Mexico. Villarreal claims Dewitt sexually assaulted her 72 times, or every Monday for about a year and a half.

Dewitt, 68, degraded Villarreal while he assaulted her, calling her his “Mexican whore” and “my Mexican,” the lawsuit states. “You are a criminal from Mexico. No one will help you here but me, so you better do as you are told,” Dewitt allegedly told her.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Villarreal said Dewitt preyed on women who had no family and few visitors. “Nobody wrote me letters. I was pretty much abandoned,” said Villarreal, who was released from prison and deported last year.

“I didn’t have much education, I was an orphan and grew up on my own. That made me a target,” she added.

Villarreal’s lawsuit—which also lists several corrections officers as defendants—provides a deeper look into allegations of Dewitt’s sickening abuse and requests damages for medical expenses, as well as an overhaul of prison policy in Arkansas.

The complaint, which alleges a violation of civil rights and negligent training and supervision, also comes as the U.S. Department of Justice investigates allegations of sexual abuse of inmates at the penitentiary.

Dewitt made national headlines in December 2015 after he was charged. Back then, The Daily Beast revealed Dewitt based his jail teachings on those of Bill Gothard, an evangelical minister accused of sexually harassing more than 30 women.

Yet no one appeared to suspect this white-haired man of the cloth was a wolf in sheep’s clothing, who secretly coerced prisoners into sex on a schedule. He assaulted one inmate on Sundays, another on Mondays and a third on Wednesdays, prosecutors said. One victim told police that Dewitt had her sit in a chair and perform oral sex on him while he stood at the door, keeping watch.

Previously a Baptist minister, Dewitt founded his prison program, Principles and Applications for Life, in 1999. He resigned in September 2014, after a former inmate wrote a letter to prison officials stating, “Chaplain Dewitt and I had a moral failure,” and sparked an investigation, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Shockingly, the state Department of Correction honored him as its “employee of the year” just one year before.

“There are so many people out there pretending to be something,” Villarreal said of Dewitt’s abuse of authority, “but they’re really criminals.”

The 43-year-old said she became acquainted with Dewitt not long after moving to the United States and going to prison.

Villarreal immigrated to Arizona and later to Texas in 2001 to escape her abusive husband in Mexico. She told The Daily Beast she worked as a waitress and a stripper in Texas, struggling to make ends meet for her three children. She was arrested four years later as a passenger in her brother’s vehicle, which was transporting drugs.

According to Villarreal, her sibling and two other male passengers lied to cops, telling them the cocaine belonged to her. (These claims could not be confirmed by The Daily Beast, but online court records show Villarreal has a conviction for cocaine possession with the intent to deliver. Meanwhile, her lawsuit states she was sentenced to 40 years.)

The distraught mother sought help to turn her life around once she was incarcerated in 2007. So she signed up for Dewitt’s non-denominational “P.A.L” program—which the parole board looked favorly upon—and became a counselor whose duties included translating for Hispanic inmates.

But in January 2013, Dewitt came to her with an “opportunity for advancement” and asked her to report to his office the following Monday at 6 a.m., her lawsuit states.

When she arrived, Dewitt locked the door and said he knew “how very attracted [she was to him],” court papers state. The pastor then allegedly told Villarreal he wanted to give her “sexual training in order to be a true woman of God.”

Despite Villarreal’s refusals, Dewitt groped her and told her she had no choice but to accept his authority, the lawsuit states. Before she left the room, he allegedly reminded her to visit his office every Monday morning “or else.”

What happened between them was a “private matter,” Dewitt allegedly warned, and if she ratted him out, no one would believe her.

Villarreal continued to visit the preacher’s post every Monday at 6 a.m. out of fear, the lawsuit states. Once she arrived, Dewitt would lecture her for 30 minutes “on how to have a proper relationship with God,” then rape her and force her to perform oral sex.

Dewitt also allegedly told Villarreal she should be grateful for his “training” and suggested she become a missionary in Mexico and thus a “woman of Godliness.”

The chaplain warned Villarreal that if she told anyone about the abuse, she would be put in segregation and never leave prison. She never reported the sexual assaults and began to contemplate suicide. The only thing keeping her from killing herself was the thought of seeing her children again, the lawsuit states.

Villarreal did not only suffer emotionally from the sexual assault; she acquired sexually transmitted infections from Dewitt, court papers allege.

Dewitt routinely bragged about his sexual exploits during PAL lectures, the lawsuit alleges, and told his flock he acquired herpes during his “glory years” as a “playboy.” Villarreal repeatedly sought help from medical staff for pelvic pain and bleeding, as well as sores in her mouth that nurses called “lie bumps,” the complaint says.

According to the lawsuit, another of Dewitt’s victims had similar symptoms in her treatment history but medical staff did not report this to higher-ups.

Dewitt allegedly continued to assault Villarreal until late July 2014, when he left for a trip and his assistant chaplain Stacey Smith took over. Smith, who was also sleeping with Dewitt, was a former inmate serving a 60-year sentence on drug charges but granted clemency by former Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Smith called Villarreal into the chaplain’s room and said she knew about the Monday sex sessions with the pastor, the lawsuit says. “Then, in an utterly bizarre gesture, Chaplain Smith said she ‘forgave’ [Villarreal]” before ordering her to leave the office,” court papers allege.

The next day, Villarreal asked Smith to remove her from the PAL program, but Smith said she couldn’t without Dewitt’s permission, the complaint states. Villarreal also asked another corrections employee, Tonya Gates, to change her barracks assignment but Gates also allegedly deferred to Dewitt.

Villarreal claims Dewitt was furious when he returned from vacation, demanding she not ask for removal from his program again. With the help of Sergeant Phillip Allen, Dewitt escorted her back to his office, the complaint says.

According to the lawsuit, Allen offered to pepper spray Villarreal and toss her into solitary confinement if Dewitt “needed help.” Once in the pastor’s quarters, Villarreal was berated by Dewitt until she promised to keep quiet about the abuse.

In September 2014, Dewitt changed his tone, asking Villarreal to “forgive” him for raping her. The chaplain informed her authorities were on his tail, and he asked her to lie to investigators, court papers allege. (That month, Smith told prison officials in a letter about her “moral failure” with Dewitt.)

Villarreal didn’t reply, because Dewitt “appeared mentally unstable, and she was worried about her safety if she said the wrong thing,” the complaint states.

Still, in December 2014, she reported the sexual assaults to the chaplain’s temporary replacement and was told a warden would interview her. Villarreal claims in her lawsuit that the warden never took action but that Arkansas State Police came knocking months later.

Villarreal’s lawsuit suggests a network of chaplains and prison employees allowed Dewitt unfettered access to potential victims.

Kristina Gates, a prison chaplain known as Gramma and who is named as a defendant, continued facilitating phone calls between Dewitt and one of his victims even after he resigned, court papers allege. Because of Gramma’s help, Villarreal initially felt unsafe in reporting Dewitt’s assaults.

Indeed, it’s unclear how Dewitt’s sexual abuse went undetected by prison officials.

Wendy Kelley, hired as the director of the state Department of Correction after Dewitt’s resignation, told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that the chaplain’s office was on the unit’s main hallway and had a floor-to-ceiling window.

“But that clearly wasn’t good enough,” Kelley told a reporter at Dewitt’s plea hearing. “So we made some moves to prevent that from ever being able to happen again.” (The prison knocked down some walls to prevent blind spots.)

The Arkansas Department of Correction, as well as Dewitt’s attorney, declined to comment on Villarreal’s lawsuit.

Joseph Lacome, an attorney for Villarreal, said he has a list of five other possible victims of Dewitt’s abuse and is awaiting the results of the DOJ’s probe into McPherson.

“The [Arkansas Department of Corrections] can make it look like, ‘Well, we’ve done our job,’ but I think it’s more systemic,” Lacome told The Daily Beast. “There’s a lot more going on in that prison.”

The neighbourhood of winding, unpaved streets and homes built precariously on steep hillsides where Yuliana lived overlooks a wealthy district of fashionable apartment buildings and stylish restaurants known as Chapinero Alto, where she died.

The coffin of Yuliana Andrea Samboní is carried away in Bogotá.

“The people from Chapinero Alto were always worrying about their safety because of that poor barrio, and all the time it was the people from the barrio that should have been worrying about those below,” said Enrique Caceres, a taxi driver.

Prosecutors charged 38-year-old Uribe, an architect, with aggravated femicide, torture, abduction and rape. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. Investigators told local media it appeared a second person might have been involved in the crime.

Yuliana was buried on Friday in her home town after funeral services held in Bogotá on Wednesday attracted throngs of mourners and protesters who released white balloons as her coffin was escorted from the church by female police officers.

Five days after her death, the case took a bizarre twist when a key witness – Fernando Merchan, the doorman of the building where Yuliana was killed – was found dead in his home. Although Merchan’s daughter found a suicide note, police said they had not ruled out foul play. “My little daughters forgive me … but I do not want to return to jail. I don’t want to ruin your Christmas, I am innocent,” Merchan allegedly wrote in the note he left, according to Semana news magazine.

Officials allege Uribe and at least one other person tried to cover up the crime scene. According to Merchan’s log and a statement he made to police, Uribe’s brother Francisco and sister Catalina spent several hours with him in the apartment where Yuliana was found before calling the police, although they knew officials were searching for the girl. The pair were questioned on Friday and have been not charged.

Francisco Uribe told local media he was “deeply sorry” for what happened. “We deeply lament the death of Yuliana,” he said. “We apologise for my brother.”

As soon as Yuliana was taken, her cousin who was with her alerted her parents, who called the police. The police managed to identify the vehicle, which was registered in the name of Francisco Uribe, a partner in one of Colombia’s most prominent law firms. He told police he had sold it to his brother Rafael but was unable to contact him.

Francisco Uribe notified police hours later that Yuliana’s body was at a vacant penthouse apartment owned by the family, after taking his brother to the hospital for treatment of a cocaine overdose. Prosecutors allege Rafael Uribe consumed a large quantity of drugs after the crimes were committed.

Rafael Uribe, who was arrested on Tuesday at the hospital where he had been treated, is being held in isolation in Bogotá’s La Picota prison.

Julbencio Samboní cries after the wake of his daughter, Yuliana Andrea Samboní.

“I demand, as Colombians demand, the most prompt and severe justice that falls on the person responsible for this murder,” said the president, Juan Manuel Santos.

The crime has sparked nationwide calls for harsher penalties for child rapists in a country where as many as 40 children are sexually abused every day, according to official statistics. While some protesters demanded chemical castration for rapists, others pressed for mandatory life sentences. Colombia made femicide – defined as a gender-based hate crime involving the killing of women – a crime in 2015.

Under Colombia’s existing laws, which do not stipulate the death penalty or life sentences, Uribe faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors have documented at least 232 cases in which boys and girls in Farc ranks suffered sexual crimes at the hands of guerrillas, including rape, forced sterilisation, forced abortion, and other kinds of sexual violence.

María Fernanda Cabal, a rightwing congresswoman, was criticised for politicising an issue on which all Colombians should come together. “They ask for a life sentence for the degenerate Rafael Uribe Noguera and then justify and defend the Farc. Selective justice?” she tweeted.

Matt Barnes Reportedly Accused of Choking Woman at NYC Nightclub (UPDATE)
UPDATED 12/5/16, 6:03 p.m.:

The Kings have released the following statement:

“We have clear standards of conduct and behavior expected of the entire Kings organization – on and off the court. We are working with all parties involved to gather information in order to take any appropriate next steps.”
Matt Barnes posted this on Instagram on Monday afternoon:

Barnes has also denied the accusations made against him through a representative, according to TMZ Sports. Barnes reportedly claims that he did not start a fight and choke a woman at New York City nightclub Avenue early Monday morning and says that he was defending himself during the alleged altercation.

The rep told TMZ Sports that it all started when DeMarcus Cousins accidentally bumped a woman sitting at a booth next to the one occupied by Barnes and Cousins at the club and that several men who were with the woman tried to get physical with Barnes. Cousins reportedly jumped into the mix to help defend his teammate before the police were called. Barnes claims he has taken photos of the injuries he sustained during the incident to prove his side of the story, and his lawyer told TMZ Sports that Barnes is “hopeful no charges will be pressed.”

.The secretary of the Army Corps of Engineers has turned down a permit for a controversial pipeline project running through North Dakota, in a victory for Native Americans and climate activists.

A celebration erupted following the Sunday announcement at the main protest camp in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, where the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and others have been protesting against the 1,172-mile Dakota Access Pipeline for months.
However it may prove to be a short-lived victory because President-elect Donald Trump has said he supports the project and policy experts believe he could reverse the decision if he wanted to.
Officials in Boulder County have released a plan to remove all genetically-modified crops from county-owned farmland within the next five years.

The county’s commissioners directed staffers to draft the plan following a series of heated public hearings in early 2016, where scientists argued farmers were being unfairly targeted and local activists said the crops in question threaten the county’s agricultural viability, and its reputation as an environmentally-conscious community.

The plan calls for farmers who lease county land for their operations to stop planting GMO corn within the next three years, and sugar beets within the next five years.
Nine farmers currently grow the modified corn and sugar beets on the county land they lease. The plants are engineered to withstand applications of an herbicide, sold under the brand name RoundUp, that kills weeds.

In their plan, county staffers acknowledged that forcing the switch to non-GMO crop varieties could result in added inputs, like the use of more pesticides and fertilizer, increased costs, and decreased yields for the affected farmers.
Michigan welfare drug screening program nets zero hits
Michigan did not catch a single welfare recipient using illegal drugs during a one-year pilot program designed to screen and test suspected substance abusers, provide them with treatment or kick them off government cash assistance if they refused.

In a Tuesday report to legislators, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said it conducted suspicion-based screenings for 14 of 443 Family Independence Program applicants or recipients between October 2015 and Sept. 30, 2016 in Allegan, Clinton and Marquette counties.

Only one of those individuals “was found by a clinician to have a reasonable suspicion of use of a controlled substance and required a substance use (drug) test,” according to the department.

However, that person dropped off the welfare rolls “for an unrelated reason” before the individual took a drug test.

All told, the state health department said it spent $700 for county clinicians to screen 14 welfare clients using an “empirically validated substance abuse screening tool.” Each drug test would have cost $75, but no welfare recipients actually took a test.
The Legislature appropriated $300,000 for the pilot program. While the department likely incurred some administrative costs on top of the screenings, spokesman Bob Wheaton said most of the funding will be returned to the state coffers for other uses.

“Our main goal was to help people who were receiving cash assistance to continue on a path toward self-sufficiency and reduce any barriers to employment, such as substance use issues,” Wheaton said.
State legislators will determine whether the pilot program helped the state achieve those goals, and whether it should continue, expand statewide or be modified in some other fashion.

3. —–Several Alabama police officers are being investigated after they were caught on camera handcuffing an innocent black woman and leaving her on the floor of a Walmart for half an hour.

Brenda Rivers and her husband were stopped by police who were investigating the theft of a wallet. The police had already stopped another woman and asked to look through her purse for the wallet but did not find anything there. They asked to do the same with Rivers, but she did not want to give the officers her purse, since they had no warrant.

The officers then detained her after they claimed that she tried to leave the scene.
Jasmine Thomas, who filmed the incident, was among the crowd of shoppers who gathered to shout their support for Rivers even as she lay handcuffed on the floor while police argued with Rivers’ husband. Several witnesses in the crowd pointed out to the officers that the victim had already said that Rivers did not look like the person who snatched her wallet.

“The lady was here, she told the officer right here that it wasn’t her,” says the woman whose purse had been searched prior to the officers stopping Rivers in the video.
“The witness told him before they arrested her that it wasn’t her, I will go to court for her,” another witness chimes in.

“She said it wasn’t me,” Rivers yells from the floor repeatedly before one of the officers tells her that she is being arrested for “failure to comply.”

“Your officer walked over to the victim and asked her, before you even apprehended [Rivers], and she said no. That is wrong, oh my God, that is wrong,” the first woman who was searched later says in the video as the police continue to accuse Rivers of interfering with and impeding their investigation.

When the victim finally arrives, it is with an officer who appears to be a sergeant as she tells the officer, “I did tell them, its not her.”

Rivers’ husband then approaches the sergeant to ask why this is being allowed to happen, at one point saying, “[The officer] didn’t ask for no ID, he didn’t ask for nothing, he just assumed she was the one that took the lady’s purse. We didn’t know what he was talking about. I thought he was joking.”

Toward the end of the video, the handcuffs are finally taken off of Rivers, and her purse is returned to her.

Divide and Rule???
That’s going on.
We are also going into 2017.
Bl*ck people have cars, trucks, vans, buses, boats.
Some of us might even have a plane or helicopter.
We have communication.
We can push newsletters, we have privately owned social media, cellular telephones, computers, house phones and some folks are still rocking a fax machine.
We can totally coordinate and eliminate Bl*ck poverty. We can can coordinate and increase our safety.
We can have a physical Bl*ck network of commerce.
But we have the isms…
We have the classism and the folks that will be hucksters and thieves.
We have the folks who prefer that many be in impoverished for a few to be enriched.
We have sexism.
Too many cis bl*ck men that seriously want bl*ck women and femmes to “know their role” and be under control.
We have rape culture and you predators out there to cause harm and you nasty n*ggas that see every bl*ck as a potential “I got some p*ssy” story.
And I can here the pro birth nation builders already.
We don’t have a healthy social infrastructure and you’re not serious about constructing one.
Let alone a physical infrastructure.
We still get gentrified.
We don’t even have neighborhoods, so fall back.
Those are just some quick thoughts I had on the way to work.
Happy Monday, F*ckos.

Dolly Offers A Pardon.
Beloved country singer and actress Dolly Parton announced on Wednesday that her foundation would be donating $1,000 every month to each family affected by the wildfires raging through the Great Smoky Mountains.

Being a Tennessee native herself, Parton’s foundation and collective of companies, including the Dollywood theme park, resort, and dinner theater, are all contributing to the Sevier County fundraiser, the “My People Fund”.

The wildfires have ravaged Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge since Monday night. Several hundred homes have already been damaged, along with thousands of acres of Tennessee wilderness.

If you’d like to donate to the fundraiser, you can visit the Dollywood Foundation website here.
